God is on a mission.  He sent Jesus into the world on a mission.  Jesus fulfilled that mission and in turn sent His disciples into the world on a mission.  These ideas are derived by these Scriptures.

I glorified You on the earth, having accomplished the work which You have given Me to do. John 17:4
As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.
John 17:18

When Satan fell and then caused man to fall, God began His mission to restore mankind.

For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. Col 1:13-14

That mission, briefly put, centers around making disciples, drawing people to the light and transforming them to do the same thing. It is multiplication.  Jesus does the work through us; we simply make ourselves available to become His hands and feet.

And He said to them, "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." Matt 4:19

"But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matt 6:20-21

The term "disciple" in the New Testament means learner. We are to follow Christ and learn from Him.  How we do that is described in these three simple steps.

1. Study

So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;  and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."  John 8:31-32

Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth. Jn 17:17

The purpose of study is to know the truth.  The truth can set us free, but it does more than that.  God uses it to change us or set us apart or sanctify us.  He uses it to make us like Christ. By learning the truth we see our faults and imperfections and the causes of our despair and problems.  By learning the truth, we find power to make changes and corrections that lead to an the abundant life God intended from the begin.

Jesus prayed that this would happen.  Do you think God will answer His prayer for this in your life?

2. Respond

Secondly, we commit to and respond to the truth.  The purpose of responding to the truth is to manifest in our life what we know to be true.  Responding is to bring our life into conformity with reality; it is to no longer live under deception or in error or in darkness.

So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind... Eph 4:17-24

But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed, and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness, resulting in further lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness, resulting in sanctificationRom 6:17-19

This change in character enables us to speak the truth with credibility and conviction. We become lights in a dark world.

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; Matt 5:14

Jesus studied the truth and Jesus responded to the truth and this led to life changing power.  We are to do the same.

And He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men. Luke 2:51-52

And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth. Jn 17:19

3. Inform

The purpose of informing others is to bring hope to them and undo what Satan had done at the beginning.

The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8

When we study and learn the truth, and respond and see the power of God to change lives, then we desire to spread this knowledge and inform others.  By informing others we bring them to step 1, study to know the truth.  Here we bring ourselves back to repeat these three steps by helping others study, respond, and inform.  The cycle is endless and the rewards are as abundant as a child growing to become a young man, and a young man growing to become a father.  It is the abundant life Jesus promised and there is no greater joy to be found on earth.

I am writing to you, little children, because your sins have been forgiven you for His name's sake. I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father. I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. 1 John 2:12-14

The Apostle John, who wrote this, saw a lot.  He saw the dead raised and was given the power to do the same himself.  But at the end of it all, this is what he claimed to be the greatest of all.

I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth. 3 John 4

That is amazing!

I leave you with what Jesus left us with.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Matthew 28:19-20
